University of Geneva [UNIGE]

The University of Geneva was founded in 1559 and is a world-class university, made up of 7 faculties and one of the 20 members of the League of European Research Universities. It has a distinguished academic record in very diverse fields of natural sciences, social sciences, medicine, the arts, law and psychology.
The Institute for Environmental Sciences (ISE) is an inter-faculty entity of the University of Geneva. The Institute’s main objectives are to undertake research and teaching activities in the numerous inter-connected domains of the environment, such as climate, water, biodiversity, health, energy, urban ecology and environmental governance. The key objective is to bridge the gap between the natural and human environments through addressing issues that include the protection of natural resources, sustainable development, social and medical well-being, and links to the policy and decision makers.
Within ISE, the enviroSPACE laboratory (Spatial Predictions and Analyses in Complex Environments) aims at promoting interdisciplinary research based on spatially explicit information, Earth observation and Spatial Data Infrastructure. The team has also recently founded TIGERS (Technology of Information for Geographic and Environment Research and Services), a network of professionals aiming to share experiences and skills in the domain of Information Systems for the Environment.
Thanks to an Institutional partnership among University of Geneva, the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)/Global Resource Information Database (GRID-Geneva) in Geneva, a close collaboration exists between enviroSPACE and GRID-Geneva (staff members presented below are working in both Institutions). Both teams are sharing infrastructure resources, personal, and are participating in common projects.

Main tasks:

UNIGE will be the coordinator of the project. Building on its extensive network in the Black Sea and South Caucasus region, UNIGE will be leading WP11 "Empowering economic development Black Sea and South Caucasus region". UNIGE will also be involved in WP2, WP3, and WP4. Thanks to its partnership with UNEP, UNIGE will be involved in WP13 as well.

The enviroSPACE Lab of the Institute for Environmental Sciences of UNIGE is involved in many research and capacity building projects. Relevant projects are:

  • FP7 enviroGRIDS, coordination: UNIGE is coordinating this large (30 partners) integrative project centred on the Black Sea catchment and aiming at building capacity for a Black Sea CatchmentObservation and Assessment System supporting Sustainable Development (
  • FP7 ACQWA, coordinated by the Climate Group of the Institute for Environmental Sciences of UNIGE. The project aims at assessing climate impacts on the quantity and quality of water in mountainous areas.
  • FP7 PEGASO, partner: development of common novel approaches to support integrated policies for the coastal, marine and maritime realms of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Basins
  • FP7 EcoArm2ERA, partner: the goal of this capacity building project is to help the Centre for Ecological-Noosphere Studies of Armenia to integrate the European Research Area in the field of environment and sustainable development.
  • FP7 AFROMAISON, partner: implementation of concrete strategies for integrated natural resources management in Africa in order to adapt to the consequences of climate change.
  • Swiss SNSF ARPEGEO, coordination: tri-partite institutional partnership (UNIGE + two Armenian research groups) in order to achieve high quality time- and cost-effective environmental assessment and research studies in Armenia, with the deployment of a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) and a Grid computing infrastructure dedicated to environmental data analysis.
